Understanding the Challenge: Why Moisture Is a Problem
Moisture moves through materials and can accumulate beneath the surface if the floor isn’t properly sealed or ventilated. In high-humidity spaces—especially bathrooms and laundry areas—this can quickly lead to damage. That’s why every layer of the floor system, from the subfloor to the finish, must be chosen and installed with care.
A properly built floor in a moist room should:
- Prevent water from penetrating the structure.
- Allow any residual moisture to evaporate safely.
- Be easy to clean and resistant to water and cleaning products.
Step 1: Choose the Right Materials
Start by selecting materials rated for use in damp or wet environments. This includes the subfloor, moisture barrier, adhesive, and the top flooring layer.
